Brown meets green: light and nutrients alter detritivore assimilation of microbial nutrients from leaf litter

چکیده

In aquatic detrital-based food webs, research suggests that autotroph-heterotroph microbial interactions exert bottom-up controls on energy and nutrient transfer. To address this emerging topic, we investigated responses to light treatments during Liriodendron tulipifera litter decomposition fed the caddisfly larvae Pycnopsyche sp. We measured litter-associated algal, fungal, bacterial biomass production. Microbes were also labeled with 14C 33P trace distinct carbon (C) phosphorus (P) supporting assimilation incorporation (growth). Litter-associated algal fungal production rates additively increased higher availability. Incorporation of P did not differ across diets, except for efficiency slower-turnover low-nutrient, shaded litter. On average, assimilated C more efficiently than or C, incorporated C. Due high biomass, fungi supported 89.6–93.1% growth, compared 0.2% 3.6% by bacteria algae. Overall, most in Our findings affirm others' regarding extend into trophic transfer nutrients through detrital webs.

Nutrients stimulate leaf breakdown rates and detritivore biomass: bottom-up eVects via heterotrophic pathways

Most nutrient enrichment studies in aquatic systems have focused on autotrophic food webs in systems where primary producers dominate the resource base. We tested the heterotrophic response to longterm nutrient enrichment in a forested, headwater stream. Our study design consisted of 2 years of pretreatment data in a reference and treatment stream and 2 years of continuous nitrogen (N) + phosph...

Leaf herbivory and nutrients increase nectar alkaloids.

Correlations between traits may constrain ecological and evolutionary responses to multispecies interactions. Many plants produce defensive compounds in nectar and leaves that could influence interactions with pollinators and herbivores, but the relationship between nectar and leaf defences is entirely unexplored. Correlations between leaf and nectar traits may be mediated by resources and prio...

Leaf Litter Mixtures Alter Microbial Community Development: Mechanisms for Non-Additive Effects in Litter Decomposition

To what extent microbial community composition can explain variability in ecosystem processes remains an open question in ecology. Microbial decomposer communities can change during litter decomposition due to biotic interactions and shifting substrate availability. Though relative abundance of decomposers may change due to mixing leaf litter, linking these shifts to the non-additive patterns o...

Nutrients from salmon parents alter selection pressures on their offspring

Organisms can modify their surrounding environment, but whether these changes are large enough to feed back and alter their evolutionary trajectories is not well understood, particularly in wild populations. Here we show that nutrient pulses from decomposing Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parents alter selection pressures on their offspring with important consequences for their phenotypic and ge...
